Marie-Hélène Fabra
Marie-Hélène Fabra was born in 1961 in Geneva, Switzerland. Graduated from l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and l’Ecole du Louvre, she lives and works in Paris and Berlin.
"From 2004 to 2007, I have realised two films on Greek tragedy into the psychiatric department of the prison of Fresnes . We used the Greek tradition of masks to get around two big difficulties: the ban on showing the prisoners’ faces, and for some of the ones with psychiatric disorders, the inability to play a role at all. The time we have spent creating the masks and designing the make-up has been at the core of our work, allowing participants a metamorphosis that both hid and revealed them.
In 2007 I spent some hours in the Prado seeing the Goya’s paintings « las negras ». After that, came the Ensor exposition at the Musée d’Orsay (Paris).
Like in the Baroque art, their gaze is key, painting gets close to theatre and realism mingles with dreamlike atmosphere.
